Sunday, August 11th, 2002It itches.
I am ready to go… now. I’ve got a hankering to leave. An itch, if you like. I’m going to wait to get my video and certificate from my TEFL course on the 22nd of August and then I will make tracks.
Today´s observation: There is nothing more obnoxious than an old Spanish man. They are the grumpiest people on the planet. They pick fights with everyone. For example, when Senegal was doing well in the World Cup they were celebrating like mad in the center of Barcelona and an old Spanish man with a cane tried to start with 150 fit and tall black men. The Africans were not amused but they didn’t kick him to death, either. I think Franco may have let the lunatics out of the hospitals before he died.
And here is the real deal on Spain: If you are unskilled laborer Spain is a great place to come. You can get the shitty jobs that the Spanish don’t want. However, if you have an education - or skills - this country is a waste of time. The nepotism and the cultural inertia (read: laziness) are unbeatable. I think it is a better idea to go to an emerging market economy to live and make a living. There you can DO things. Here it is easier to stand in line, or teach English. The teaching English thing is the kiss of death. I think I would rather wash dishes. The money is bad and you have really boring conversations. I guess some people like it, though.
