Looking for airline tickets. Back to the search f…
Friday, October 31st, 2003Looking for airline tickets.
Back to the search for plane tickets. My plan is to go down to Ecuador and then to Panama, to go surfing.
The problem is: Airlines charge huge fees for surfboards. (Of course they don’t charge golfers for their clubs, so this treatment is really just discrimination, somebody get my attorney!)
During the round the world trip, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand didn’t charge anything.
So, since I am already making this list for my own edification, I thought I would put it up for anyone else who might want to know about airline surcharges for surfboards, all the other sites on the net are woefully out of date.
Air New Zealand Free if you don’t have a lot of crap.
American Airlines $60 Each Way per board.
America West $80 Each Way per board.
COPA $50 Each Way and a one board limit
Delta $75 Each Way per board, also there is an embargo for winter.
Iberia “Surf board 2 flat charges”* (Say what?) How about this, the winner, and champion $200 per board each way!!! Andale!!!
LAN Chile $75 Each Way, possibly per board.
Northwest Airlines$80 Each way per board.
Singapore Airlines Free if you don’t have a lot of crap.
TACA $25 per board from Washington, D.C. free from Miami.
Continental ***This whole thing is rather dubious. I’ putting the copy from their website online, and then I’ll call them and check. This is what the site reads:“Surfboard/Wakeboard Continental Airlines will accept one surfboard/wakeboard or one surfboard bag containing up to two boards per customer as checked baggage. Domestically, a surfboard/wakeboard or one surfboard bag containing up to two boards is subject to a $80.00 service charge (each way). Contact Continental Airlines at 1-800-525-0280 or at our worldwide reservations numbers for international service charge rate information. The skeg/fin must be removed or well padded. I called: That was indeed bullshit. Ignore what they put on the website. Actual retail price is $ 100 per board / per direction to Latin America. Also, to celebrate the holiday season, they are not allowing surf boards, there is an embargo. Feliz Navidad!
