Replacing a Deck Pad on My Surfboard

Monday, August 30th, 2004

This whole thing is turning into a fiasco. I am trying to replace the deck pad on my surf board since my old one tore. It is nearly impossible to get the old glue off. If only Cox Internet service were overachievers like Astrodeck.

If I figure out something I’ll post it, becuase there is no reference on the internet for this.

So far I’ve tried acetone… but all that did was remove my nail polish.

Merde!

I’m on Earthquake watch. Ready for the big one….

A lot has happened that I haven’t written about.

Before Luke left, Susi and he and I went to Baja for a day. We drove down and checked K38, but it wasn’t really doing it so we decided to drive down to La Fonda (K58). When I turned the ignition to drive down, we were met with a resounding “Click!” Doh! The car wouldn’t start and we had to get a jump from some other gringos. We debated turning around right then, and then debated getting a battery. Before I took the plunge to buy a new battery I tried to start the car in front of the ferreteria where they sold batteries. To my surprise, the car started right up. No problems.

So we continued down to La Fonda to go surfing assuming that if we had to we could get another jump.

The waves were bigger than North County San Diego, but pretty mixed up. I wound up getting the best wave of the past six months there, getting covered up twice on a punchy little left-hander. Unfortunately, the wave before that one, Luke fell on his board and snapped it. So we got lunch, some killer fish tacos and then drove back to the United States of America. The line to cross back over the boarder was awful. But we were prepared and just bought food and drinks and crap from the hawkers at the border.

Then I went to Alaska. John had organized a trip to the Kenai Peninsula to catch salmon. Alaska was great. At first we were a little disappointed with the fishing because the reds were in the river, and apparently, they don’t bite. So you have to gently put the lure in the fish’s mouth. Some people called it “force-feeding”, which is fairly apropos. However, this changed. We did a fly-out, where they drop you off at a fishing spot via float plane. This was probably the best fishing as we were catching pinks and silvers on flies, getting them to come to the surface to hit surface flies. I’d never actually caught a salmon on a fly and it was one of those things that I can now check off on my list of things to do in this lifetime. Great fun! Then we fished for king salmons for a couple days and I caught one that was about 35lbs. But I released it. We had already amassed enough salmon to keep us eating fish for quite some time. I am now thinking of buying some land up there in the Kenai. It was refreshing to be away from civilization for a while, and I will definitely be going back. It was also great to catch up with Mom and Dad and John while we were up there.

My hair is blue.

This is only going to last one more day, because I am shaving it off on Saturday night. Some of my co-workers and myself dyed our hair blue for charity. It is an event put on by the Stone Brewing Company and the money we raised will benefit the Children’s Hospital, Locks of Love and the American Cancer Society. I’m not sure how much money we have raised since the money is pooled between six of us. But I’m pretty sure it was a fairly good amount. I am sure of one thing, I am sick of having blue hair. People keep approaching me saying, “I have to ask.” I want to stop them and say, “no you don’t”. Or else they say, “Did you lose a bet?” Or comment how much we look like smurfs, but smurfs have blue skin.

Other than that, the most over-hyped swell … ever … hit the Coast of California, not with a bang, but a whimper. It has been a bad summer for surf.

That is a pretty good summary of where things are. I’ll be more diligent in my postings.

Now I am waiting for Cox to return and fix my broadband, it mysteriously stopped working. Of course, I’m doubtful whether they will actually show. But we’ll see.
