Bruxism and Adam Smith

Saturday, October 30th, 2004

I think my bruxism has worsened the closer we get to the elections.

Of course it will all be over soon.

It seems to me that we are reaching a point where the “invisible hand” of Adam Smith, as well as the benefits of luxurious consumption written of by Bernard de Mandeville has reached the point of absurdity.

Unlike the present day, self-interest, luxury, profit motivation and greed in the 18th century didn’t come at the expense of the world’s poor, the environment or our own health.

It bring to mind the Ouroboros. The image of the snake eating it’s own tail, but not in some modern faux-Zen soft-headed karma way. (Death and life and blah blah blah.) Instead it is a showcase of our own greed. We are eating ourselves.

A Book.

Tuesday, October 26th, 2004

I am reading a book.

It is a very good book.

The name of the book is “Going Nucular” by Geoffrey Nunberg.

This guy is great. The book is a collection of essays on language and how it reflects changing cultural values and sensibilities.

For example, the word “Caucasian” as he points out, actually means “white”. The etymology of the at word refers tot he people that stepped off of Noah’s Ark, in the Caucus mountains. What “Caucasians” actually refers to is “European Americans”.

There are a lot of more of these pearls in the book.

Harpers Magazine Weekly Newsletter

Tuesday, October 26th, 2004

I love the weekly newsletter from Harper’s Magazine.

Here is a quote:

President Bush accused Senator John Kerry of using

“old-style scare tactics” in his campaign for president;

Vice President Dick Cheney warned that John Kerry isn’t

strong enough to win the war on terrorism, especially if a

nuclear bomb goes off in the middle of one of our cities.

Check out the one from this week.

I recently saw Fahrenheit 911 and the reason why I was under-whelmed was that I had been reading the same stuff every week for years before Michael Moore made his film. That isn’t to say that I wasn’t pleased that the film was made, but he didn’t actually dig very deep.

I guarantee if you sign up you will be entertained and informed.

It has the entire week’s news in 3 short paragraphs.

The Bush Hump

Tuesday, October 26th, 2004

This is kind of old news, but since I don’t have a T.V., sometimes I am a bit slow on pop culture.

I have been reading about this on the internet.

It is pretty interesting.

First of all, let me say, I am not a rich man.

I do not own very expensive suits.

I am not interested in wasting money on them.

However, I have never had a hump on my back nor have I seen a hump on anyone else’s back from a suit.

Here is a picture of Dubya during one of the debates.

There are rumours that it is something to monitor his heart, or something to feed him lines from Mr. Rove.

I’m not sure what it is, but it looks weird.

Boston

Sunday, October 24th, 2004

Here are they qualifying times for the Boston Marathon.

I’m still debating whether or not I am going to try and do it.

That breaks down to a pace of 07:15 per mile.

Never Again.

All right, I’m not doing this again.

I’ve donated enough money to people’s retirements.

Sriracha HOT Chili Sauce

Saturday, October 23rd, 2004

Oh, the wonders of Sriracha.

This stuff is the duct tape of food.

Everything tastes better with Sriracha.

Today, I put some on an English Muffin with some peanut butter.

It tasted like Pad Thai.

Yum….

Here is Luke with a bottle.

Crap

The local break, Ponto, is closed due to poop in the water.

Here is the water report.

Camping in Vegas?

Friday, October 22nd, 2004

Are you allowed to camp in Las Vegas?

Is that performance art?

Strange.
