I like the last line…

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

This comes from the ubiquitous Chinese-restaurant-horoscope-place-mat, I especially like the ominous last line.

“Tiger people are aggressive, courageous, candid and sensitive. You are hotheaded but have a magnetic character hard to resist. You love to take chances and rebel against authority. Look to the Horse and Dog for happiness. Beware of the Monkey.”

Words to live by…

books

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I’m in the middle of about three books right now. I have been getting beaten down by the 100 best novels of all time. It is time to take a break. I actually went to the library today. That is about the most exciting thing I have to report. A trip to the library. I have now wasted 30 seconds of your life. And you won’t get them back.

This looks great. I am going to see what they are up to.

Back from Lisbon.

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I just got back from Lisbon and the European Open BJJ Championships.
Well… let’s just say, it was nice to go to Portugal…

I won one fight, and lost one fight.
That, in and of itself, isn’t too bad.
But I made a really dumb mistake.
I am going to chalk this one up as an experience and hopefully do better next time.
It seems like a big part of my brain shuts off when the match starts and I do really silly things. I’m going to concentrate on keeping myself relaxed and I should do better. I really wanted to do well, more than the other competitions, so naturally I messed up.

However, it was good to hang out with people from the gym, and Susi and I both had fun.

Winning isn’t everything.

(Winners never say that though…)

European Championships

Friday, January 26th, 2007

I am walking out the door for the European Championships in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I’m keeping this trip in perspective as well. There are going to be lots of good people there. I hope I do well, but if not, I’m sure we’ll enjoy Lisbon.

The funniest Office yet…

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

The American “Office” has surpassed the British “Office” officially.
This weeks episode has a pinñata.

Farming.

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

I, like Google, am thinking of starting a Miscanthus farm. I want to start the farm on my balcony, and brew ethanol to power my Mad Max-style escape vehicle… when the marauding bands start pillaging London.

The weather.

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

It is very windy. The C.H.A.V.s are blowing around the estate like tumbleweeds.

Not even close to being famous.

On January 12th, I was on TV. Celebrity Big Brother’s Big Mouth came to Roger’s gym and filmed and I was one of the people selected to give my opinion. They wanted to know who I thought would win… I told them Shilpa. Because she was the most attractive. The truth is, I had only seen one picture of her. I had called Susi from work saying I might be on TV and I needed a sound byte. We both agreed that Shilpa was a good selection, and I thought it would be good for race relations in this country.
Turns out, I was on the right track.

There is racism in the house against Shilpa, a lovely Bollywood star. This has created almost an international incident. They are burning the shows producers in effigy in India.

They are going to need to sequester some C.H.A.V.s once they get out of the house.

I promise not to talk about being on TV or Big Brother ever again. (Or be on TV again.)
Terrible.

The word "Liberal"

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

I just listened to a talk by Geoffrey Nunberg. It was about his new book and partly about how the word “liberal” has changed it’s meaning in the parlance of American popular opinion.
I couldn’t really remember when “Liberal” wasn’t spoken as almost a curse word. It started with Reagan and has continued since.
Well, I found an example.
I was watching “Citizen Kane” today. A reasonable thing to do on a Sunday afternoon.
Here is a line from the movie:

I am speaking of Charles Foster Kane.
The fighting liberal.
The friend of the working man.

I’ve never actually heard that usage of liberal before. Certainly not “fighting liberal”.
